Tutoring Job Opportunities
Ivy West California's leading one-on-one in-home test prep provider, has built a reputation founded on the quality of an exceptional group of instructors. Come join our diverse team of dynamic people who enjoy teaching and mentoring high school students through an exciting and often anxiety-ridden rite of passage: the SAT®.
The Job
Ivy West is currently seeking Math and Verbal Skills instructors to tutor the SAT, one-on-one in students’ homes. We strive to provide the most effective program, for each student; Ivy West’s Program Coordinators and tutors work together to customize each program to address the needs of the individual student.
We provide our tutors with comprehensive paid SAT Test Prep Training on our proprietary curriculum and method, Ivy West course materials, and student assignments that meet their availability. Tutors also have 24-hour access to IvyNet, our convenient online intranet system, where they can view student files, record lesson notes, and log payroll hours.
Each tutor receives the dedicated support of an Ivy West Program Coordinator. Our Coordinators have first hand knowledge of the rewards the job provides and the commitment it requires. Just as the Ivy West tutor is dedicated to the success of each student, the Ivy West Coordinator is committed to enabling each tutor to deliver effective programs.
In addition to preparing students for the SAT, tutors will have the opportunity to teach programs for SAT Subject Tests (formerly SAT II’s), the ACT and high school admissions. While the majority of our tutors focus on one-on-one teaching, we also partner with schools to offer our program in a classroom environment. Our tutors also have the option to teach these classes.
Ivy West tutors earn $25-$40 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications, and are eligible for regular performance-based increases. As part-time employees of Ivy West, tutors may enroll in our 401k, group auto, homeowners, and renters insurance rates, and supplemental health benefits.
Ivy West Tutors:
- Are friendly, conscientious, and professional.
- Have teaching or leadership experience with high school students, or have the potential to motivate and connect with high school students.
- Are excellent communicators and gifted test-takers.
- Specialize in either the Math or Verbal Skills (Critical Reading and Writing) portion of the SAT, so mastery of both subject areas is not essential.
- Possess impressive academic backgrounds.
- May use their expertise in academic subjects such as Literature, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, advanced math, and languages to prepare students for SAT Subject Tests in those areas.
- Can commit at least through the end of the upcoming testing season in early December, although our goal is to continue working with successful tutors as long as they are available.
- Must have reliable access to a car for traveling to students’ homes.
- Must have reliable internet access to enter lesson notes and log payroll hours.
The Lessons
This part-time position provides considerable flexibility and autonomy since instructors schedule lessons directly with students. Because we work primarily with high school students in their homes, lessons take place on weekday afternoons and evenings, and on the weekends. Most tutors work an average of 5 to 15 hours per week; some average as many as 20 hours per week, especially at the busiest periods of the testing season.
In order to ensure the most effective program for each student, we match tutors and students based on the students’ test scores, geographic location, scheduling preferences, and our tutors’ backgrounds, abilities, and availability. Tutors typically meet with each student once a week or once every other week, leading up to a specific test date. The number of lessons in a student’s program is set up when the student enrolls and can range from four to eleven 90-minute sessions with each tutor.
We hire tutors to work in specific geographic regions. Tutors usually stay within a 35-minute driving radius of their homes.
